It is certainly no secret that hot chocolate remains one of the best drinks around, especially come night time. However, its health benefits may come as a surprise to most. This is because numerous studies have shown that plain chocolate is a good source of magnesium and other nutrients.
Making a healthy cup of hot chocolate isn’t really all that complicated. Just make sure you have the following ingredients on hand:
- 85g plain, unsweetened chocolate
- 480ml non-fat, almond or soya milk
- A bit of chopped cinnamon
- Clear honey
To do this, start by heating a third of the milk in a saucepan before stirring in the chocolate. Do this until the chocolate melts and you have a nice looking mixture then you whisk in the cinnamon and the rest of the milk. Use the honey to sweeten the drink as you like.
Now, for those unfamiliar with magnesium, it is worth noting that this particular nutrient has been known to produce a relaxing effect. This is because magnesium helps manage and regulate the body’s cortisol levels – commonly known as the stress hormone. Needless to say, it is hardly surprising that magnesium-rich drinks like chocolate have been known to help its drinkers relax and unwind.
