When John Downey opened his namesake restaurant in
1982 the concept was simple... Serve thevery
best food available, and serve it in a comfortable, unintimidating
setting where it would beeasy to drop in for
an exquisite dinner. The idea worked well. It worked so well that twenty
four years later that same tenet still applies. It has not gone un-noticed
by the dining press, who, over the years have consistently awarded Downey's
top honors for fine dining.
"FOOD & WINE" Magazine recently said "As
for dinner, we found Downey's, hands down, to be the best bet in town...".
And the "2006 ZAGAT SURVEY" gave them Santa Barbara's highest
ratings of 28 for food and 26 for service. (Zagat describes ratings of
26 to 30 as being "exrtraordinary to perfection"). Downey's
also proudly displays the prestigious DiRONA Award for fine dining.
The menu changes constantly with the availability of
fine foods andthe creativity of Chef John Downey. When you go to his restaurant
be sure to try one of the incredible appetizers such as the Santa Barbara
Mussels with Sweetcorn & Chili Vinaigrette or home-made Duck Sausage
with Lentils. Entrees will often include the most delicious Grilled Lamb
Loin or maybe Local Sea Bass with a Ragout of Prawns & Spring Vegetables.
The wine list is in the care of Liz Downey, who will
be happy to guide you through some of the California- produced selections
(with a proud bias towards the locally made wines!)
Adorning the soft green walls of Downey's dining room you will find
beautiful plein-aire paintings of local scenes by co-owner Liz Downey.
Paintings are available for sale.
Downey's is located at 1305 State Street (at Victoria)
in downtown Santa Barbara.
